Veteran soapie actress Nambitha Mpumlwana has reacted to news that she was arrested for allegedly stealing lipsticks at a local Dis-Chem store.
The former Generations star appeared in the Randburg Magistrate Court and was released on R1 000.
NAMBITHA MPULWANA RESPONDS TO SHOPLIFTING ARREST
According to Sunday World, Nambitha Mpumlwana was recently arrested after she was accused of pocketing lipsticks worth R160 at Dis-Chem at Ferndale Mall.
The actress is widely known for playing shrewd businesswoman Mawande Memela in the SABC 1 soapie Generations.
According to an unidentified policeman, Nambitha explained that it was a “misunderstanding.” However, the store proceeded to press charges of shoplifting, resulting in the actress’s arrest. Nambitha was released on bail after appearing in court this week.
On her Instagram account, the veteran thespian reacted to the news by liking a comment under a post that read: “Why are people telling lies?”\
In another post, she indirectly addressed her critics with a post that read: “Sometimes you just have to let people be wrong about you”.
The South African contacted Nambitha Mpumlwana for comment, but she did not respond at the time of publication.
NOT THE FIRST ‘GENERATIONS’ ACTRESS ACCUSED OF STEALING
Nambitha Mpumlwana is not the first Generations actress who was accused of shoplifting.
In 2013, Maggie Benedict – who played Akhona Miya – was arrested for allegedly stealing Panados from a Checkers store in Cresta, Johannesburg.
But like Nambitha, Maggie claimed it was all a misunderstanding and accused the store of wrongful arrest. In a Facebook post, Maggie stated that she had purchased the unopened pack of painkillers weeks before and could not provide a till slip.
She posted: “I, UNEQUIVOCALLY, DID NOT STEAL HEADACHE TABLETS FROM CHECKERS. I am innocent of this alleged crime, and there was no basis for the arrest. Every item in my possession was paid for, including the tablets I’d purchased weeks earlier that were still unopened.
“Checkers could not provide proof either as the camera covering the relevant aisle didn’t work….Neither party has conclusive evidence of the alleged crime.
She added: “I am appalled that this ill-handled misunderstanding requires not a diplomatic conversation to resolve, but rather, a piece of my character.”
“I guess it is far easier to ‘Make An Example Of That Actress’ than it is to admit that perhaps, just perhaps, Checkers’ Anti‐Theft machines and cameras might need a service.”
In 2015, Maggie was found not guilty of shoplifting.
